SAN FRANCISCO - Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has died, reports Associated Press. He was 56.
According to the reports, Jobs has died due to pancreatic cancer and has suffered other health issues since 2004.
"Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family," his relatives said in a brief statement.
"In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve."
Meanwhile, new Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced Job's death to the staff through e-mail Wednesday.
"I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today," Cook wrote.
"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
Jobs founded Apple in 1976 and from that year, Apple has evolved into a multi-billion company. In August 2011, he stepped down as Apple CEO due to health problems. Tim Cook, Apple COO, took over.
