Lumet, who has been nominated for best director at the Academy Awards for his movies 12 Angry Men (1957), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and The Verdict (1982), died of lymphoma, according to her stepdaughter.
The director, who was born in Philadelphia in 1924, never won an Oscar, yet he was nominated four times as "Best Director" and received a Lifetime Achievement in 2005.
