LUANDA, Angola – Miss Universe 2011, Leila Lopes of Angola accepted the invitation by the United Nations to become a Goodwill Ambassador for Desertification, formulated last month by this world body.
Leila Lopes expressed her availability on Wednesday during a meeting between the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations in New York, the Executive Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the Miss Universe Organization.
The meeting that was led by the Permanent Representative of Angola in the United Nation the Ambassador Ismael Gaspar Martins, the Miss Universe and the members of Miss Universe organization received information from the executive Secretariat of UNCCD about the role and importance of the Goodwill Ambassador for Desertification.
Although she recognized that it is a difficult mission, she accepted the challenge, explaining that will be gratifying to help to mitigate the phenomenon of desertification and its consequences.
With 194 signatory countries, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was established in 1994. It is the unique international legal instrument on environment, development and promotion of soil health, facilitating the millennium development goals.
