QUEZON CITY, Philippines - 23-year-old Olga Alava from Ecuador has been crowned as Miss Earth 2011 in a pageant finale held at University of the Philippines Theatre in Quezon City Saturday night. Alava, who was crowned by her predecessor, Nicole Faria of India, is the first Miss Earth titlist from Ecuador.
Meanwhile, Miss Brazil, Driely Bennettone, was crowned Miss Air while crowd favorite Athena Mae Imperial of the Philippines was named Miss Water. Miss Venezuela, Caroline Medina, however, ended as Miss Fire after her interpreter ruined her chances of winning.
Misses from Mexico, Crimea, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Zimbabwe completed the Top 8 finalist. On the other hand, candidates from Ukraine, Chinese Taipei, Sweden, Paraguay, Thailand, Portugal, Japan, and Slovenia were among the Top 16.
Early favorites such as Misses India, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, and Tanzania surprisingly failed to make the cut.
Eighty-five beautiful delegates from around the world competed for the title.
